Oven-baked paint (paint booth with baking) is a method where a vehicle's paint and clear coat are applied in an enclosed, filtered booth and cured with heat in that same booth. Compared to regular paint, the surface is smoother and more durable. In our workshop at Kepez Akdeniz Sanayi Sitesi industrial estate, we carry out all paint work in a dust-free oven-baked booth; panel painting usually takes 1–2 days, and a complete respray takes 5–10 days.
What is oven-baked paint?
Oven-baked paint is the process of spraying automotive paint in a sealed, dust-free booth and curing it by heating inside that same booth. Although the word "oven" might sound like a kitchen oven, what is meant here is a specialized spray booth with controlled airflow and temperature.
Factory-new vehicles are painted using a similar principle. In repair workshops, the goal of this system is to ensure the new paint is minimally affected by environmental factors and achieves a smooth finish. In the trade, it is also referred to as booth-baked car paint; the meaning is identical.
How is oven-baked paint applied?
Preparation is completed before the car enters the booth. The booth is strictly for spraying and curing. The sequence of the process is generally as follows:
- Inspection and assessmentDamage, paint thickness, and previous repairs are checked. Inspection at our workshop is free.
- Surface preparationDamaged paint is removed, scratches and minor dents are smoothed out, and body filler is applied and sanded. Preparation quality is the stage that most impacts paint longevity.
- Primer and maskingPrimer is applied, and areas not being painted are masked off. Parts to be painted are removed from the vehicle whenever possible.
- Paint and clear coat in the boothThe panel is painted in the dust-free booth, followed by clear coat application. Digital color matching is used for exact color tone.
- Heat curingThe booth is heated, and the paint cures in a controlled manner. In standard practice, this stage is carried out at approximately 60–80°C; the paint system instructions determine the exact settings.
- Machine polishing and quality checkThe surface is machine polished if needed, parts are reassembled, and the vehicle is inspected in daylight.

How many layers make up car paint?
Understanding the paint layers helps explain how oven-baked painting works. Generally, automotive paint consists of four parts: a protective primer on the bare metal sheet, body filler and secondary primer to level the surface, the base coat that gives color, and the top clear coat providing gloss and protection.
There are specific flash-off intervals between the layers sprayed inside the booth. If dust sticks to the surface during these intervals, pinhead-sized specks remain trapped in the clear coat. An enclosed booth exists specifically to eliminate this problem. Heat curing then helps the layers cure evenly and properly.
Paint durability does not depend solely on the booth. Applying primer to a clean surface, matching paint and clear coat brands properly, and maintaining correct layer thickness are equally critical. That is why oven-baked paint should not be seen as a magic fix on its own.
Difference between oven-baked paint and regular paint
The difference between the two methods shows in the final surface finish and how the paint behaves over time. The comparison below provides a general overview; final quality also depends on the paint brand and the technician's preparation.
| Feature | Oven-baked paint | Regular (open-air) paint |
|---|---|---|
| Application environment | Enclosed, filtered, dust-free booth | Open workshop floor or simple partition |
| Curing / Drying | Inside booth with controlled heat | At room temperature in ambient air |
| Risk of dust and imperfections | Low | Higher |
| Surface finish | Smooth and glossy, minimal orange peel | Dust specks and imperfections may appear |
| Curing uniformity | Paint and clear coat cure more evenly | Takes longer and may cure unevenly |
| Cost | Generally higher | Generally lower |
| Time required | Curing inside the booth is quick | Requires waiting for natural drying |
Why is there a price difference? The booth, filtration system, energy, and equipment incur ongoing operating costs. However, a workshop having a paint booth does not automatically guarantee quality work. A workshop that neglects surface preparation will produce poor results even inside a booth.
Common questions about oven-baked paint
Is baking a car in an oven harmful? No. What is heated is the booth air, not the vehicle itself, and temperature is strictly controlled. To prevent damage to plastics, weatherstripping, and electronics, heat-sensitive components are removed whenever necessary.
Can it be applied to every panel? Yes; exterior parts such as doors, hoods, fenders, bumpers, and roofs can all be painted in the booth. Booth dimensions matter for larger vehicles, but most cars and light commercial vehicles fit easily.
What happens first if there is damage? The booth is the final stage of painting. Damage is repaired first, the surface is prepared, and only then does the part enter the booth. For this reason, with heavy damage, total turnaround time depends more on the repair phase than the booth.
When should oven-baked paint be preferred?
A booth can be used for any paint job, and in most cases it should be. Nevertheless, its importance is even more critical in specific situations:
- On dark or metallic colored vehicles, where dust and imperfections stand out clearly.
- When doing a complete respray or painting large panels (hood, roof).
- If you plan to sell your vehicle and want the paintwork to look pristine during pre-purchase inspection.
- If previous paintwork has issues (bubbling, peeling) and you need a permanent fix.

How long does oven-baked paint take and how much does it cost?
Duration varies depending on the scope of work. Curing in the booth is a brief stage; most of the time is spent on preparation.
| Job | Price range | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Door painting | 3,500–6,000 TL | 1–2 days |
| Bumper painting | 2,500–5,000 TL | 1–2 days |
| Hood or roof | 5,000–10,000 TL | 1–2 days |
| Complete vehicle respray | 25,000–80,000 TL | 5–10 days |

What should you look out for when getting oven-baked paint?
When choosing a workshop, do not simply rely on the phrase "we have a booth." Ask the following questions and, if possible, inspect on site:
- Is the paint booth sealed and filtered, and are paint jobs actually carried out inside this booth?
- Which paint system is used? We work with PPG and Standox.
- Are parts disassembled before painting, or simply masked off on the car?
- How is color matching performed?
- Is there a workmanship warranty?
Tip: Inspect the vehicle in daylight upon handover. If there are dust specks, clear coat runs, or excessive orange peel, point them out before taking delivery.

Why is oven-baked paint even more important in Antalya?
Throughout the summer in Antalya, sunlight is intense and cars are often parked outdoors. Heat, UV radiation, and humidity wear down paint over time. The clear coat layer is the first line of defense against these factors; a properly cured clear coat stays glossy much longer than an unevenly dried one.
This is not a guarantee of years; it is general advice. Parking your car in the shade whenever possible, washing it regularly, and getting annual polishing maintenance directly prolong paint life.
What should you do in the first weeks after painting?
Even though paint coming out of the booth appears dry on the outside, full curing can take days or weeks. Here are general guidelines for this period; follow your technician's specific instructions for exact timelines:
- Do not stick adhesive items (tape, stickers) on the vehicle in the first few days.
- Avoid automatic brush car washes and high-pressure washing; wash gently by hand.
- Wipe away bird droppings, tree sap, and insect residue promptly.
- Do not apply wax or polish immediately over fresh paint; allow the paint to fully cure.
- Park the car in the shade as much as possible.
These care rules also apply to regular paint; with oven-baked paint, curing is more predictable, which reduces surprises at the end of the process.
Questions to ask yourself before getting oven-baked paint
Three questions are enough to determine whether your vehicle needs oven-baked paint. First: is the damage only a surface scratch, or is the paint itself compromised? Second: is only a single panel being painted, or multiple panels? Third: how long do you plan to keep driving the car?
If a scratch is only in the clear coat, machine polishing is often sufficient and a booth is unnecessary. If the paint is damaged or the flaw spans an entire panel, oven-baked painting in a booth is the proper solution. If you find it hard to decide, send us a photo and we will share our preliminary assessment.

Common misconceptions about oven-baked paint
There is no such thing as "oven-baked paint never degrades." Sun, humidity, harsh brush car washes, and bird droppings wear down oven-baked paint as well. The difference is that properly applied paint resists these factors much better. In the initial weeks following fresh paint, avoid high-pressure washing and waxing, and follow your technician's care advice.

Frequently asked questions
What is oven-baked paint?
Oven-baked paint is a method where paint and clear coat are applied inside an enclosed, filtered booth and cured with heat inside that booth. Dust is prevented from entering, and the paint cures at a controlled temperature. The result is a smoother and more durable surface.
What is the difference between oven-baked paint and regular paint?
The main difference lies in the application environment and curing process. Oven-baked paint is performed in a dust-free booth and cured with heat. Regular paint is done in an open area or simple partition and dries at room temperature, which carries a much higher risk of dust and surface imperfections.
How many days does car oven-baked painting take?
In our workshop, single panel painting usually takes 1–2 days, and a complete respray takes 5–10 days. Curing inside the booth is a brief part of the job; preparation and damage repair are what primarily determine the total duration.
Is oven-baked paint more expensive?
Generally, it costs more than open-air painting due to booth and equipment expenses. We perform all paint jobs in an oven-baked booth; you can check our price guide for our current price ranges.
Does oven-baked painting damage the vehicle?
Curing applied at the correct temperature and duration does not harm the vehicle. Heat and time are adjusted accordingly for components such as plastic bumpers. Heat-sensitive parts are removed before painting if necessary.
Will the color match when using oven-baked paint?
Color match depends on the paint mixture and color matching rather than the booth itself. We use PPG and Standox paint and perform digital color matching. For weathered or aged paint, blending into adjacent panels may also be necessary.
How do you identify a reputable oven-baked paint workshop?
Ask to see the enclosed paint booth at the workshop, inquire whether it is truly dust-free, and ask how parts are prepared. Simply being told "we have a booth" is not enough; proper booth operation and thorough preparation stages are equally critical.
How many years does oven-baked paint last?
Durability depends on the paint system used, preparation quality, vehicle care, and conditions such as sun and humidity in Antalya. We do not promise an exact number of years; we provide guaranteed workmanship and recommend regular washing and polishing maintenance.
