Four small habits to reduce parking damage

These are general driving tips—not to blame anyone, but to help prevent recurring damage.

• In narrow streets, park so that the exit side remains clear
• Check the distance to the adjacent vehicle before opening your door
• Fold side mirrors in tight passages if they are foldable
• In parking garages with pillars, pay attention to the clearance between the bumper corner and the column

When should you visit a body shop for a minor scuff?

A mark left on the surface can often be polished out with machine polishing alone. If your fingernail catches, it has penetrated down to the paint layer; in that case, spot repair painting or scratch repair is required. Will the paint shade match the adjacent panel?

A color mismatch between adjacent panels is most noticeable in city driving, where the vehicle is constantly visible. We use digital color matching and work with PPG and Standox paint in a dust-free baking booth. Inspect the difference side by side at delivery, preferably in daylight.

The first mistake is photographing damage without cleaning it; dirt obscures the scratch's depth. Wipe or wash the area before taking photos. The second mistake is leaving bare metal or plastic exposed; rain and moisture worsen the damage. The third is waiting around thinking a small dent will "go away over time"; dents do not fix themselves.

Bumper, door, and fender: separate evaluations

Bumper. Because plastic bumpers are flexible, scuffs usually damage only surface paint while the structure remains intact. If paint is peeled, the surface is prepared and the bumper is painted. If cracked, it is repaired first.

Door. On metal doors, dents distort the shape of the panel alongside cracking the paint. The panel is repaired first, followed by body filler, primer, and paint. Door edge dings mostly fall into this category.

Fender. Fenders are among the most frequently damaged areas during parking scuffs. Spot repair painting works if damage is limited; if it covers a wider area, painting the whole fender yields a cleaner finish and avoids color tone discrepancies.

If more than one of these panels is damaged, painting them in the same booth baking cycle is advantageous for color harmony. We will specify during assessment which panels should be processed together and in what sequence.
