Why does paint degrade faster on cars near the coast?

In areas close to the sea, moisture and salt in the air put more stress on a vehicle's paint and metal than in inland locations. This is general knowledge; not every car is affected at the same rate. Parking location, whether the vehicle is kept in a covered garage, and washing habits make the difference.

Three common symptoms seen in Lara

Dull spots in the clear coat. Gloss fades especially on horizontal surfaces most exposed to the sun, like the hood and roof. If the surface is still smooth, it can be revived with machine polishing.

Brown ring around stone chips. Rust may have started around a small rock chip. At this stage, spot intervention is both less expensive and faster.

Bubbling at the edges. If paint bubbles along lower door edges and fender curves, moisture has penetrated beneath the paint; the bubbling area is sanded down and repainted.

Machine polishing, spot repair painting, or panel painting?

The decision depends on how degraded the surface is. The list below is a general guide; the final decision is made during assessment.

• Machine polishing: if the clear coat is intact and only appears dull
• Spot repair painting: if only a single spot or small area is damaged
• Panel painting: if clear coat is peeling over a wide area or bubbling is spreading
• Complete respray: if damage is spread across most of the vehicle and painting panels individually becomes impractical

This difference is often visible with a simple light test: look from the side of the car and check the clarity of the reflection. If the reflection is hazy, the clear coat is starting to degrade.
